“Shopping for Time” by Carolyn Mahaney and her daughters- Nicole Whitacre, Kristin Chesemore and Janelle Bradshaw (2007/ 2016 Redesign, Crossway) is an easy read on a topic that as women we are often needing: more time. Mahaney et al. invite you in to their family table discussion on time and schedule. This book is short, which is helpful for those looking for time!

“Shopping for Time” is divided into 6 Chapters, with five tips to help people, women in particular, with their time management and productivity. Since reading this book, I have been implementing their tips on a personal level and have been greatly encouraged that they work. Their tips aren’t easy- some rather difficult involving that item known as an alarm clock- yet, as I read the book and was challenged by it, and then worked out how and what to apply to my own life, I have been finding I am more purposeful, productive and peaceful, which flows on to my family.

In reading this book, I was also greatly encouraged by the consideration of seasons of life and God’s hand over our time. While we plan and make decisions and use our time, it is ultimately God who ordains the moments and length of our life. This is key when we consider time management and productivity- we need to focus firstly on God.

As Mahaney et. al say:

“Scripture provides ample evidence that God sets the boundaries for each season. God determines when one closes and a new one begins. He is in complete charge and sovereignly rules over every season of our lives. And his purpose for our lives in each season ultimately cannot be frustrated.” pp.23-24

As we consider the idea of time and productivity, understanding God through his word, and trusting God in the moments, gives us freedom to not fear. While we can be productive and purposeful, we can fully submit to God, knowing that what he plans will prevail.
